Virtuous Prom creates gorgeous modest formal dresses featured on Business Building Women

We have seen a lot of modest formal dress companies over the last year but often found the designs to be a bit outdated and the prices far too high. Megan MacNeal had these issues in mind when she started Virtuous Prom. She set out to create breathtaking modest dresses at an affordable price. She has definetly succeeded! We were absolutely blown away at her designs and reasonable pricing.

While building her business, Megan quickly learned the importance of social media management and became familiar with the complicated world of SEOS. She has taken the time to share her journey, lessons she’s learned and her beautiful dresses with us today!

You can find more information about Virtuous Prom on their website, Facebook and Instagram.

Tell us about yourself.

I currently live in Milwaukee with my husband David and our two French Bulldogs. In my free time I enjoy reading, traveling, gardening and photography.

How did you get into your business?

I actually needed a modest formal myself and I was appalled at how expensive most of them were! If I, as an adult, didn’t want to pay $300-$500 for a dress, how were teenagers? After a lot of asking around, it became apparent to me that this was a very under served market and the rest, as they say, is history!

What has been your biggest challenge?

Technology, especially Google, has been one of my biggest challenges. Learning how to manage a team has also been a huge learning curve!

What do you wish you’d known when you started?

I wish I could have come to this experience with a firm grasp of how to build a good website and harness social media marketing.

If you could narrow your success down to one thing, what would it be?

Tenacity. No matter what happened, I just wasn’t ready to fail or give up. So, I sunk my heels in. Sometimes you have to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat.

Where do you see yourself in a year?

I see myself doing much of what I do now. I love my job and I’d be honored to keep being able to do it in the future!

What are your top three tips for women starting a business?

  1. Surrounded yourself with good (and knowledgeable) people. If you can, get yourself a mentor! Having a supportive network of friends can make all the difference!
  2. Never stop learning! Today’s business landscape is dominated by things like the Google algorithms and social media marketing, which seem to always be in flux. Sometimes it feels like a full time job keeping up with these changes, but it’s so necessary for business success!
  3. Cultivate who you are outside of your business. It’s easy to want to throw everything you are into your small business, but that road leads to burnout!

What does a typical day look like for you?

A typical day sees me juggling customer inquiries, processing orders, working on our website or our Etsy store, and handling our social media marketing.

What is your business motto or quote you live by?

My favorite quote is “This too shall pass.” It helps me to savor the good times, knowing they’re not permanent, and it helps me not so stress so much when things get tough!

If you were starting your business over again, what would you do differently?

I would definitely have researched how Google and social media marketing works in more detail. In hindsight, I definitely would have worked more on increasing our organic visibility than in creating additional designs.
